Opening .eps in Inkscape?!

Postby Yoggi » Fri Sep 12, 2014 4:49 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm quite new on this topic, but I've downloaded some vector graphics that I need to separate from each other as I only need one of the several objects for my website. The file is in eps-format, and I can't make inkscape open this file. I've been trying to look for answers on the net and read something about importing the file in pdf-format instead. As there actually was a pdf-file included in the zip-package I tried to import this one in inkscape, which worked fine. However I'm not able to do anything with the objects or split them inside inkscape. Am I missing something or is this the only way to do it? Is there any other way of opening and editing an eps-file without Illustrator, or a way of converting eps to an inkscape-compatible format? I'm a mac user.

Thanks!

Hello Yoggi!

The eps part can be caused by the ghostscript version your inkscape uses is outdated?
Not sure, but others may be able to open it with no problems.

For the pdf: probably the objects you see are grouped together in many-many ways, and maybe clipping is involved too.
Select all the objects, and press Ctrl+Shift+G until the bottom indicator bar tells no more object remains that can be ungrouped.

Please see FAQ item# 3.7: http://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/

Or simply search the forum, where this question has been answered many times, and discussed at length, many times before.

Might have to dig a little, and I'm not going to do the digging for you -- but I'm sure the answer is also found in the manual. Help menu > Inkscape manual

Thanks, but I've been looking at the FAQ but problem is there's only information for windows users. I'll try to search the forum again, but last time i couldn't find an answer to my specific question. I feel rather frustrated about this as it should be simple opening a simple file in a program designed to deal with vectors. Does anyone know another program except illustrator that opens eps-files?!

Alright.. How do i know if my inkscape uses ghostscrips then?
About the pdf there's no way of selecting many objects as the pdf behaves just like a pdf inside Inkscape. I can select the whole image but not specific objects in it, which is kind of the problem..

I'd try viewing the status bar... it might say x-number of objects in groupxxx...

The ungroup button or Shift+Ctrl+G used repeatedly may get the objects all ungrouped.

Objects may also be clipped... I'd check the status bar and remove clipping.

Also possible the pdf has embedded rasters.

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
