Press Shift+Ctrl+D to bring up the document's properties panel, where you can set a canvas size.

File > Document Properties.

There you can (amongst other things) set the page size to one of several defaults, selecting Portrait or Landscape using the radio buttons below, or you can set a custom size for the page.

Edit: Beaten to it by Lazur, but now you've got a choice of keyboard shortcut or menu ;)

Try File > New instead.

Just to add a little more info to the good advice above: There are several options of page sizes, etc. Go to the icon that looks like a wrench (Document Properties), then use the scroll bar in the middle of the screen on Page Sizes, I think a CD cover is already there, but it might be listed in metrics - and I really don't use the metric system or CD's. oh, and you can set your menus to be inches, MM, etc., if you set it there, it only changes for that document, but you can also go to the File tab, and go into the Preferences and re-set some defaults.
Now, if the size you want ISN'T there, you can make a CD template and place it in the Inkscape default folder (in your c: drive), it's pretty easy to do actually. I've created several. (you can make any templates you want, FB covers, avi sizes, whatever). If you want to do that, come back and ask, and someone will help you, if need be. You can also do a forum search to learn how to do this.
I changed several of my page defaults, got rid of the shadow on the border, change the zoom size to 25%, I now automatically have 3 layers, etc, you can change all sorts of neat things!
good luck.

I think Xav was trying to tell you that cd and dvd cover templates are included in the standard Inkscape document templates.
When you create a new document while in Inkscape, from the file menu select "File>new". CD and DVD cover templates are listed in the drop-down menu, just
scroll down until you find them.
There are also convenient page templates for making Icons, business cards, and letters.
Using the template will save you the trouble of setting page size, orientation, and guides yourself even though you can still set-up
a custom page if you want to, and save that as a template to reuse later.

Good luck with your project, and welcome to the wonderful world of Inkscape.

Hi, just downloaded Inkscape. I'm trying to design a poster for our band. I'm not used to these type of programmes but I've been given the task. I've downloaded a template unzipped it and got it on Inkscape. I've added some text and tried to print in A4 just to see how it looks. Eventually, the posters need to be A3 but my printer doesn't do A3. When I print I only get part of the document. I'd like to print the whole document and see how it looks. I've clicked on A4 in document properties and set portrait but it doesn't stay set. The document size is showing as 744.09 x 1052.36. Please be patient as I'm a pensioner. Thanks in advance.

744,09/1052,36 is portrait format.
Size is displayed as width/height, and if width is smaller then height, it's called portrait,
if bigger than height, it's landscape format.
Furthermore the size 744,09/1052,36 is displayed in pixels as default,
which represents the A4's 210/297 mm size at 90 dpi resolution.
You can set the basic measure to mm in the document properties panel making it less confusing.
For printing, I suggest to save the document as a pdf.
