Initializing error

Postby Oldcodger » Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:58 am

I only recently got a new PC with the Windows 7 32/64 bit system. I downloaded Inkscape and it worked for the first couple of days but then when I went to open it I got the following message
“The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application”.

I uninstalled Inkscape, downloaded it again and reinstalled it but got the same problem.

The only fix I have been able to find so far is to go into the Computers Advanced System Settings and in the Data Execution Prevention Tab make an exception for the Inkscape program.
Can anyone tell me if this is a known problem and if so will it be fixed within the program itself so that a change of the DEP Settings will not be necessary.
I apologize if I am posting this in the wrong place but I was not sure exactly which section to post in.

Have you tried deleting the preferences.xml file? Maybe it got corrupted, you can find it in your Inkscape folder.

I have the same error message on windows vista. will have a look into it. both my 0.47 and devel versions seem to be affected

For me, after dismissing the errors, Inkscape apperars, but File->Open/Save/Print don't work. Very odd. Seems to be a problem with accessing native dialogues, caused by a system update.

No prkos I have not tried deleting any file. Is the preferences.xml file you mention in the hidden files and folders as I can find one there but nowhere else.
Is it all right to delete it. Does it recreate itself. Sorry for my ignorance.

OK. I have no idea what the problem was, but after updating antivirus, windows update,iTunes, and restarting the computer Inkscape now runs fine, so that's what I recommend you do.

I did a Windows Update check. There was an update available relative to compatability issues. So firstly I reversed what I had done earlier regarding making an exception for Inkscape in the Data Execution Prevention Tab within Systems, then I updated my windows updates and Inkscape is functioning properly as far as I can tell for the moment. So that is good. Thanks.
