I could really use someone's help. I'm new to Inkscape, and have spend hours upon hours just trying to 'edit' and 'trim' a few things with a logo. I've figured out the different ways to erase, but NOW the problem is that I can't seem to edit spiral object produced by the spiral tool because it then loses all the paths and thus changes the object entirely. All I want to do it shave off the smallest little things. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
Attached is the logo I've created. I'm trying to trim where the 'H' overlaps the spiral, so that there is a smooth connection with the lines.

Re: How to erase in Inkscape without closing paths?
I've been fooling around with it and found that if I create a spiral and add the path effect "Sketch", then I can erase parts of the line effortlessly. I don't know why I can only do this when I've added this effect. Also, I tried adding a billion nodes to a regular spiral, since there are tons of nodes in the 'sketch' spiral, and still...when I go to erase, the nodes just get pushed around by the eraser, changing the shape and closing the spiral path.

Oh sweet lord, I figured it out! Change the spiral to a pattern instead of an object under "Object" tab. FINALLYYYYYYYY.
Re: How to erase in Inkscape without closing paths?
I guess Path -> 'stroke to path', or just Path -> 'object to path' would have been the more common choice. Maybe next time

Re: How to erase in Inkscape without closing paths?
The Eraser tool isn't very dependable, in my experience. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I typically avoid using it, and actually have never used it, except for troubleshooting to answer forum messages.
For your image, the bottom of the H, that extends below the spiral....I would have either made the spiral wider (add and/or adjust the stroke, after stroke to path) or made the text slightly smaller.
If there were larger areas to be removed, it would depend on the area. I might do some node editing. Or I might use a Path Operation (such as Difference).

Re: How to erase in Inkscape without closing paths?
Hey Brynn, thanks for the advice - I ended up using the 'difference' tool to erase the bits I needed...Worked like a charm.
