I'm using (still) 0.48.1 so this may already be known. I've made some dots with the Pen tool (Ctrl click) and then scaled them. (edit - scaled with Selection tool) Later if I add a stroke, the stroke widths appear to have all been scaled. Each dot's new stroke has a width that is wider, the larger the dot. So it appears to me, that even though I've deselected the option to scale stroke widths, the width is being scaled on dots (which I know are simply circles). I'm not sure which seems weirder -- the width being scaled despite the control bar button being deselected, or that the strokes are scaled while they don't yet exist!

I did find this bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/805392. I can't follow all the technical discussion, but it sounds like this was reported for the new renderer. So even though it sounds similar, it might not be.

Check that Pen option/mode isn't set to "Triangle In/Out". I give a schreenshot of the Pen tool property dialog box that works.

To chechk wheter a bug is fixed, you can download a develop version from here.

I have the Pen set to Straight Line mode, and Pencil to Regular mode, and both set for None in the Shape field. The stroke scaling happens whether I make the dot with the Pen or Pencil.

Have you tried to deleted the settings files?

This is on Windows 7, 64-bit. I also have Inkscape on an XP machine, but I haven't used it lately, and don't know if this problem occurs there. Actually I may only have 0.47 on that computer, I can't remember for sure....

I have not tried deleting that file. And honestly, I'd rather not, because then I'd have to go through and make all my custom settings again. Right?
But I already have the scale stroke width option deselected. Can you explain how deleting the setting file might help? (I'm not contradicting your comments, I just don't understand.)

If I remember there was a problem with ellipses and the stroke being transformed with the ellipse no matter what that had to do complying w/SVG specs. I am gueesing the proble will go away when you do object to path. I know you want to keep them ellipses, of course....

You're absolutely right. I usually do Object to Path on them, but I've been doing that as the last step. It will be easy enough to get in the habit of "pathifying" before scaling and adding stroke.
