saving as dxf or dwg

Postby rubins » Fri Sep 23, 2011 7:33 pm

Hello, for lasercutting I need to save my drawing in a dxf of dwg file. How can I do this? Because when I save as DXF, a dxf.dat file is made. Where they do the cutting they cannot open the file.
Thanks for your reply. Have a nice day, rubins

Hi rubins,
What is your operating system and Inkscape version?
Are you first saving as SVG, and then saving again as DXF? I've just tried to save a DXF file (to test), and when I click save, a dialog comes up. The dialog only has 2 options, but on the Help tab are several important requirements for saving the file. E.G. the SVG must be in pixels, DXF must be in mm, and several others. Have you double-checked that you've followed them?

In my test, the file saved properly as filename.dxf, using either option. Of course I have no way of testing the file, since I have no program that uses DXF files. But it does appear to save properly. (I'm on Win7, 64-bits, Inkscape 0.48.1)

Hi Brynn, thanx. Do I first have to save as SVG and then as DXF?
SVG drawing has to be in pixels bij 90 ppi. Do I have to do something with my settings in Inkscape to achieve that?
DXF drawing must be in mm. What do they mean with that? That the cuttinglines are in mm?

Yes, I'm suggesting that first saving as SVG, and then as DXF, might help. I don't know for sure, but it has helped in other situations of file conversion.

I'm afraid I don't know what all that means on the Help tab of the DXF dialog. I've not used cutters/plotters, so it's all beyond my skill set. I just wanted to bring it to your attention.

Also, please post your operating system and Inkscape version. Sometimes there are bugs that affect some systems and not others.

Maybe someone who knows more about using or converting to DXF can reply, please?
