Help needed to convert pixellated jpg to vector

Postby AdamA. » Wed Nov 18, 2015 4:46 am

Hi! Just wanted to say that I read through the topic about posting questions properly, and that I've looked at FAQs, other topics, and other resources to try and answer my question. However, I can't quite seem to understand what I'm doing wrong.

Basically I have a jpg image I created in MS Paint that I'd like to have expanded to 30x40 inches and printed. The printers are saying it's too pixellated when they expand it. I downloaded Inkscape to try and convert the jpg into a PDF that won't be pixellated.

So I was given this page to reference : http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/20397/how-to-transform-a-pixel-image-in-vector-logo-in-inkscape

When I followed the above page's instructions, I noticed that the resulting trace had color that was very washed-out in contrast to the sharp color of the original image, instead of recreating the image 100%. I fiddled with the settings but nothing helped. Is there a way to resolve this? Is there a way to transfer my jpg 100% into Inkscape and have it non-pixellated? Is there another way to create a PDF that a printer can expand into 30x40 without it being pixellated?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

which version of inkscape ?
0.48 was very bad at color reduction.

Don't know if 0.91 is better either

Depending on your logo, you can just copy-paste the color using the dropper tool: http://en.flossmanuals.net/inkscape/too ... pper-tool/

I'll see if this works. I tried to use fill/stroke and it colored in the whole image. It's actually a pretty complex image w/ lots of different color so I'll have to try and muddle through. Really appreciate the info! If anyone else has any tips, I'd be happy to hear them.

It sounds like you may be in over your head. Can you show us the JPG?

Those instructions for converting a pixel image using Trace Bitmap might not work for your image. It's hard to say for sure, without seeing your image. But if you run into other problems, let us know. We can probably help with the options in the Trace Bitmap dialog.

It could be you'll just have to re-create it the size you want, in MS Paint. But I'll keep my fingers crossed :D

Very much so, unfortunately. The image is too large to be an attachment, so I included it as an image here. All rights reserved, haha:

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi.

For a clean image you would need recreating it, similarly how you made it in paint.
If you need that as it is exactly, that would take more effort -finding out the right width/height for every ellipse and rectangle one by one is more cumbersome than throwing up random shapes on the canvas. Same stands with colours.

However you can generate similar images quickly with the built in tools.

I've tried around a bit, but this image is really tough (for me, at least). Result is not great...

1. Removed the artifacts that were created by jpg compression by using selective Gaussian blur in Gimp.
2. Used Color mode, 30 colors works half-way decently. Stack scans, but don't smoothe.
3. Result looks bad, because of the pixelated stair-like appearance of the black lines, colors come out great ;)

I agree with Lazur - creating this from scratch will give you much, much better results.

Yes, I agree. That one is going to be very, very hard to convert using Trace Bitmap. If it needs to be vector, you could draw it like that right in Inkscape! After it's finished, you can make it larger or smaller, without any blurriness.

Actually I'm not very familiar with raster graphics (like MS Paint). I'm trying to think how to tell you to do it with Inkscape, compared to how you did in Paint, but I'm not sure how you might have done in Paint. So I can only tell you for Inkscape.

Draw rectangles with Rectangle tool :tool_rectangle: . Draw circles and ovals with Ellipse tool :tool_ellipse: . Use the Paint Bucket tool :tool_paintbucket: to fill in the colors.

When you use the Paint Bucket tool, you'll need to set the Grow/Shrink option to something like 0.50 to maybe 0.70. In some places, you might need to adjust the nodes for the colored paths. But it's not hard to do!

I think is easily within your ability :D

Hope you didn't get the impression it is not doable.

Here goes a ten minute scribble for example:
