Align and Distribute radially?

Postby brynn » Thu Aug 21, 2008 4:45 am

Hi Friends,
I'm just working on an image in which I have a bunch of objects in a row, a bunch of rows, and then one end of each row meet at one point, creating a starburst kind effect. And I need to align and distribute the objects radially....or...circumferentially :? At this point, I'm content to align/distribute each row, and use guides and snapping to set them at equal angles. So my question is not how to do it (at least not right now).

I'm curious if align and distribute radially or circumferentially has ever been discussed? Or considered as a potential new feature request? I've searched at Launchpad, and nothing turns up (search words 'align distribute radially'). I'm curious what other Inkscape users think about this idea. Or are there other current features which can be used to do this, differently or better than I described?

Thanks as always for you excellent support :D

I haven't seen such a request before, but I think it's a good idea. I would probably be a little too advanced to include with the other alignment options because I could see it requiring a few parameters.

For example, you would need to be able to specify the radius, obviously. But you might also require an option to rotate the objects as they are spread around the circumference (so they point to the centre).

Note that if you are radially distributing duplicate objects you can use Tile Clones for that.

Oh, Tiled Clones, yes!
I've just been starting to play around with them, so it didn't come to mind. Maybe I'll try the radial variety on this image.

Now that you mention the tiled clones option, I think I won't pursue posting a feature request about this, at this time. But it'll be in the back of my mind, because I like to make mandalas.

Thanks micro :D

I tried to achieve this by making a circle and then working with Effects -> Generate from Path -> Pattern Along Path. Sadly, there is no option to have combined objects simply be distributed, they are always morphed, too (Text along Path has the possibility not to morph the single characters, so the feature is already 'out there' )

But: along the way i noticed that randomly spaced, randomly big rectangles patterned along a circular path look very much like some StarTrek console displays. :ugeek: Yay!
