inkscape and android

Postby mam53 » Mon Jan 10, 2011 1:10 pm

What I thought I would raise is the possibility of an android port of inkscape - with honeycomb coming to decently powered tablets sometime early this year it seems like it may be an interesting thing to look into.
I've read up on toolchains that can convert linux binaries to android but i'm a huge noob when it comes to the nitty gritty of porting/compiling etc. It seems like there is a possibility and anyone with any opinions on if/how this could be done is more than welcome to share their thoughts!

(ps. I know that this wouldn't be touch friendly, but for people with wireless keyboard/mouse support, it would be a godsend)

yes, it would be really great to see inkscape and other open source software like, gimp, blender as well as the many good video and audio editing tools ported to android :geek:

Good idea, but there are an awful lot of libraries and dependencies to be ported across with Inkscape. For instance; glib, GTK, poppler, cairo, libMagick, pango, libjpg, libpng.

I used to have a bit with these on the windows platform, but I'm definitely not the guy to be talking to about porting them to Android.

Also, given that Inkscape is still quite slow even on full powered PC's, it would need to get a lot quicker or lose a fair degree of functionality to work well on a smartphone/tablet.

Isn't android java based? In which case your porting language not just platform. Plus it would be hideousy slow. Ui would need some work for a tablet too I expect.
