Unable to export bitmap.

Postby typeorange » Wed Dec 17, 2014 9:24 am

Inkscape seems to just ignore the "Export Bitmap" command. I've tried selecting it from the menu and the keyboard shortcut. As far as I can tell, it does nothing. No dialogue box, no error, no change in the window, nothing.

Any idea why Inkscape would just ignore a request to Export Bitmap?

I've been struggling to get some artwork I did in Inkscape to import into Scribus. No matter which format (.svg, .eps, .ps, .pdf, etc.) I use, Scribus refuses to something sane with the file. The original artwork has a clipping path in it, so typically importing the file just includes the full design: ignoring the clipping path. Sometimes Scribus will do weird things with scaling, too. In fairness, this seems to be Scribus' problem, but I should be able to just spoonfeed scribus by giving it bitmap data...

In short, I want Scribus to use some artwork I've made with Inkscape in something like the form it shows up in Inkscape. Scribus seems totally broken in this respect, and I'm just trying to give it the simplest thing possible.

I'm just trying to hack something together quickly, and Inkscape won't let me just export to bitmap so I can force Scribus to just do the correct thing with my artwork.

Either that or a format where Scribus will recognize and respect clipping paths in a vector file?

I'm not familiar with scribus, but the file you described in your other topic doesn't seem too complex and probably it should work from an svg format.
Did you try to open svg-s without clipping? If that works, creating a copy without them could be a quick solution.

Thanks for the help. I was able to get this to work with Inkscape for Windows and the same version of Inkscape for OS X on another, newer machine (2014 Macbook Pro). Seems to be an issue with the setup I was working with at the time (iMac 2008)?

Inkscape version and operating system?

Uninstall/reinstall?

If you're using an Inkscape version where Export Bitmap can't be docked, or otherwise it isn't docked, and you minimize it (or minimized it the last time you used Inkscape), it might be opening where only a small title bar is showing (usually in my experience it's over the Style Indicator area, which is the bottom, left area of the window). And usually it's about 2 inches wide. Easy to miss! Especially if it's an older version of Inkscape, this could happen. Maybe it doesn't happen in newer versions - I haven't tested lately.

It might be a stupid question ( mine! ) but Export to bitmap works in two steps:
1) You save to your folder
2) Click Export

I have forgotten this last step myself a couple of times but do you remember to click export?

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

To me, it seems like the problem isn't solved for the operating system he was working on. That's why I posted comments, even though he fixed it on 2 other machines.
