[solved] Thread gradually being thinner

Postby Grobe » Tue Apr 05, 2011 3:02 am

Hi.

Is it possible to make a line to be, say 2px in one end and 0.8px in the other end?

If not possible directly, Is there a workaround to get the illusion of a rope or line that have a ending that is further "inwards" in the image?

Ideally I wish to get the illusion of a rope (doesn't have to look realistic) that hang from a tree to another, and I stand on the ground next to one of the trees and looks at the rope.

Thanks

You have to do a stroke to path, and then use the node tool to select only the nodes at the end you want to narrow and scale them using the < and > keys or the scale arrows if they are enabled on the control bar.
To get a rope texture you would have to use pattern to path , scaling becomes more complicated. I suggest the perspective or envelope extensions.
Your mind is what you think it is.

You could also use the "Shape" drop-down to select "Triangle In" if you're drawing with the :tool_pencil: or :tool_pen: tools. This has the effect of applying a "pattern along path" which is thick at one end and runs to zero width at the other. If you don't want it to go to zero there's the option of creating your own shape to use for the pattern and copying it to the clipboard for use with the "From Clipboard" option on the drop-down. Thanks Xav. The method of using Shape -> "From Clipboard" seems to be the most efficient way to do this concerning time consuming. I had to do it a dosen times before I realized how to do it, but it was definitely worth it :D

One thing I did miss when chosing "Triangle out" is that Stroke to Path doesn't work on that kind of objects. And also with that preset, I cannot alter the start thicknes for the path. So I stay to the custom shapes from now on :)

With "Pattern Along Path" applied, just using "Object to Path" will "fix" the pattern in place, which in this case will have a similar effect, I suspect. Although having done that you'll lose the ability to alter it by changing the original path, so you might want to leave this as late in the process as you can.

Yes, it will be too many nodes to be practice to alter manually.
