filters blending two objects

Postby gandalf » Sat Jan 07, 2017 8:06 am

Hi there, I am just learning how to use filters (and possibly the filter editor) in inkscape. I have 0.92, but my questions are not tied to this particular version.

Following up on a different thread, I want to achieve an effect like in the attached screenshot, but using filters. In the screenshot, there are two objects, yellow on top of the blue one, both of which are groups of many small objects making up the pattern. Now I would like to have just one pattern in the background (the blue one) and a single path on top of it, then use an appropriate filter to achieve the same effect.

Basically my question is how to do this. In more detail, what is a good filter to use? I poked around the color menu but did not find what I was looking for. All these filters seem to affect only the selected object, whereas I want to blend it with the background (the blue pattern) to achieve the desired effect. I then had a look at the filter editor and found in some video tutorial, that first of all, one has to open up the svg file in a text editor and type

enable-background="new"

in the right place. This tutorial was for some old version of inkscape. Is there now a better way? And then, even with this option enabled (blending with a background image now works), I found it difficult to achieve the shown effect - there are many blending options, and many colors to choose from. Any idea how to go about this?

Many thanks!

Hi.

In 0.92 there is an object browser -object/objects.
There is a dropdown list with all the available blending modes.
Hard light or colour dodge are there for a similar effect.

I'd say it's possible to make a custom colormap filter for such a use too.
Testing it.

Tested it, works like a charm.
Here is a screen capture of it.

The used extension is here.
(Although rigging a custom duotone filter by stacking two flood fills over eachother isn't a big deal either, this one can generate filters from groups as well from as many colours as you like.)

Wow, that looks very cool! And even with a screen capture, that's just perfect for me to learn it - thanks a lot!

It seems the filter editor is a very powerful tool, which I will certainly look into more.

So thanks again, that was a very helpful reply indeed.

You are welcome!

Wouldn't say that the filter editor is an easy part of the interface, but Xav has almost covered the basic options
in his series in Full Circle Magazine, from part 48.
