Grid Extension issues

Postby brynn » Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:41 pm

Hi Friends,
I'm trying to fill this simple square:

with a grid via the Grid Rendering Extension (Extensions > Render > Grid) like this:

Image

But as you can see here,
Image

the grid is separated into horizontal lines and vertical lines, that are some distance away from each other.

When this 1st happened, in another Inkscape doc, they were separated by the full page, with the vertical in the top, left corner, and the horizontal in the bottom, right corner, and the page being the default 744.09 x 1052.36 px. I thought the extension was broken, because it appeared to only render the vertical lines, and it was only later that I found the horizontal lines quite some distance away. But here, they end up on the same screen.

I read in the Guide that this extension fills the bounding box rather than the shape or path. But in this case, the bounding box is virtually the same as the square. So I'm perplexed :P

Anyone have any idea what's happening here?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it :D

[Edit] Edit topic title to plural issues.

It seems that the Grid extension wasn't written with relative coordinates in mind. This is bug 401567.

If you uncheck "Allow relative coordinates" in Inkscape Preferences (in the SVG output section), the extension should work correctly.

Ah, thank you sas.
The workaround works perfectly!

[Edit] On 2nd thought, I'm trying to learn how to use the Filter Editor, and hopefully create a filter using the grid. Since I have only just begun to learn about filters, I don't have any knowledge base with which to predict whether this problem might carry over to the filter (should I be successful in creating it). I'm guessing no. But what if someone used such a filter, but their Inkscape Prefs had the "Allow relative coordinates" checked? I'm still guessing no, but am I correct?

As long as you're not expecting users of the filter to run the Grid extension themselves, it won't matter if they have "Allow relative coordinates" checked.

Ok, that's what I suspected.
Thanks again, sas :D

Well, ok. While we're on the subject, I'm wondering if I've found another bug, known or not.

When I use the Grid Extension, and set the Line Width to, eg - 1.0, the grid that's rendered has line widths of 1.250, according to the Fill/Stroke dialog. If I set it to 4.0, for another example, it's rendered with line widths of 5.0.

Is this expected? If not, should it be reported? I did search Launchpad, and found nothing about it (although I don't have much confidence in the Launchpad search engine).

Thanks again for you help :D
