How to reset 3D boxes

Postby Clipper » Mon Dec 10, 2012 11:27 pm

Hi all,
I'm sorry if this was asked before but I can't create a normal 3d box now. Every time I try the final result is a weird thing but not a 3d box. I know that there is a parameter that say "Last used style" but unchecking that didn't work.
Thanks for your answers.

You can change the default by clicking on Inkscape Preferences, then Shapes, then 3D preferences.
Mine seems to reset itself each time, but, it's really tempermental, if I scroll even a few nodes down it goes big and 'bonkery', so best to try to start with a very small 3D box, then adjust the nodes independently. good luck.

Apparently the 3D Box can't be reset to defaults. In my opinion, that would be good feature to have, because I had the same trouble as you, and I think many people problem have the same problem. I played around with mine so much that I couldn't make anything even vaguely resembling a box, lol!

Try this. Set Angle X to 30, then disengage the VP button. Do the same for Angle Z. Then set Angle Y for 90, and leave it's VP button engaged.

Also, it's important to know that the X and Z vanishing points (VP) are always placed at the left and right page borders for an A4 page even if you aren't using an A4 page! And also, they're placed halfway between top and bottom borders of an A4 page. And one more important point. If you try to draw a 3D Box outside the page borders, the box will be really funky, because its vanishing points are still on the page borders. A box drawn in the top, left corner, inside the borders, looks very different from a box drawn in bottom, right corner. So to be sure that you're starting with a typical box shape, draw it as close to the center of the page as possible. If you've made the page border so it doesn't show, maybe good idea to show it, at least until you have a good box drawn.

And finally, I would strongly suggest reading through the manual info. While most of Inkscape's other tools can be picked up and fairly successfuly used to draw without reading the manual, the 3D Box is not as easy to figure out. http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... Boxes.html It's very complex!

PS - one more tip. Do not use Path menu > Object to Path. Each box panel already IS a path. This is different from all the other shape tools. Just ungroup to show the nodes :D

If you really need it to go back to default state, try deleting your preferences file, found in your documents/username/application data/inkscape folder.
Your mind is what you think it is.
