Hi all,
I am new to this forum. I have been trying to learn Inkscape. It's a great software.
I have a problem. I added a text object to my scene. It's an exclamatinon mark (!)
I tried to object to path but I failed. What should I do? Any help is appreciated.
How to break apart a text object?
Re: How to break apart a text object?
Try Path -> Object to Path again. Make sure you have the exclamation mark selected. Also take a look into the status bar, to see what Inkscape has to say as to why it doesn't work. If this doesn't help, upload the file, so people can have a look.

Re: How to break apart a text object?
Hi Moini,
I finally found a way to break apart. It's awkard though. Here is the video link:

Is there any mistake? Is there a shorter and practical way to to this? Thanks.

Re: How to break apart a text object?
No, that's how you do it.
It doesn't seem so bad to me. It's just 2 steps. But we don't know what else is happening in the file. Or what your goal is. Maybe there's some reason why 2 steps is too much?
Can you explain more about it? There still might be a better way to reach your ultimate goal.

Re: How to break apart a text object?
Oh, I see. The issue you have is with it creating a group of letters. This is for the user's convenience.
If you do Object to path with a text, it creates one object per letter, and groups all letters of the text, so it's easier to handle that bunch of letters.
One might argue that grouping isn't necessary, if it's just a single letter - if you like, and there isn't one for it already, you can create a new feature request here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape

Re: How to break apart a text object?
Thank you brynn and Moini
I'm new to Inkscape. I actually tried to create an exclamation mark but I failed. Then I found it from a suitable font. I don't like the square shape of the exclamation mark and wanted to replace it with a circle so I had to break them apart. That's all.
I believe Inskcape is a great software. I always use Blender and want to use it with blender for .svg support.
Maybe I create a feature request. Thank you

If you ever need some nice cliparts, you can also browse openclipart.org, a website that was created by people who also were contributors to Inkscape. It provides > 120000 public domain svg images for download and for learning by taking them apart.

Not sure if breaking apart letters in one go makes any sense when you count in letters-with-holes" which you have to repair otherwise:
Cheers

Re: How to break apart a text object?
The feature request would have been to not create a group when it's just a single letter (it wouldn't be needed).
