Issue with Linked Offsets on text. What a pain

Postby clawlan » Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:03 am

I read a bunch of threads here but nothing I read helped so I guess its time for a new thread. I am using v0.47. I am following this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bycHg_-xI8g.

Here is the problem. I select the txt, go to Path>Object to Path. Nothing appears to happen. Regardless, I then go to Path>Linked Offset. Now according to the tutorial, I should have a single node, but instead, There are no nodes and when I move the cursor over a letter, the letter outlines in red.

I got this to work before not too long ago, but I remember there was a step that I had to do differently or something, but now I can remember it or figure it out. I'd rather not go straight to linked offset because that creates a separate object behind the original. I just want it to work like the tutorial. Any ideas?

A change from 0.46 to 0.47 in how Inkscape changes text to paths now creates a group of individual letter paths. You have to ungroup those paths and combine the individual paths before doing your linked offset.

Can you give me a run down of how to do that? I am fairly new to the program.

Keep your eye on the statusbar when converting to path (or any other time because it gives you very useful info). It will tell you when you have a text object selected, after you convert to a path it will say you have a group. That is because when text is converted to a path each letter is converted separately and then all are grouped.

Ungroup the letters, then to Path Combine, this will join all the letters into a one single path. The statusbar should tell you that you have a path selected. Now you can do the offsets ;)
