The title is pretty much self-explanatory, but I'm working with a document that contains more or less 50 layers, and I need to select multiple layers at once from the Layers Dialogue and then delete them. However, I can't figure out how to do this. I thought it would be as simple as holding SHIFT, as can be done elsewhere in Inkscape, but neither holding SHIFT or CTRL works. Dragging also doesn't work.
How do I select multiple layers in the Layers Dialogue?
Also, one side question: I'm pretty sure I've done this before by accident, but is there a Path Dialogue box, say, that lists all the Paths or their IDs and other relevant information in a given layer?
Thanks!
Sorry if my question isn't properly structured. I'm working on a job right now, which I need to finish as soon as possible; hence no time to read the rules, etc.
Select (or delete) multiple layers at once
Re: Select (or delete) multiple layers at once
Weclcome to the forum gk01,
Shift+Ctrl+X gives you an overview about the objects and also layers. But unfortunately even there, as far as I can see you cannot select or delete several objects or layers at once. Too bad... maybe there is still another way which I am not aware of...
Well, a solution might be:
It seems that you can create sublayers by dragging layers into others (directly in the Layer Dialog Ctrl+Shift+L).
I dont't know if it's possible in your case. But if you already create or drag all layers which you want to delete later into one specific layer then you can delete this latter layer and all sublayers are gone at once.
No offense, just to mention... if you had read the "rules", e.g. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=745
you would have read that if you are under time pressure it's your problem not ours

Re: Select (or delete) multiple layers at once
I think the easiest way to delete multiple layers at once would be to hide all the layers that you want to keep. Then with all the layers that you want to get rid of visible, Ctrl + a (select all), then Delete.
Although this leaves the layers in place, in the Layers dialog, they are all empty of contents.
You can delete consecutive layers, by repeatedly clicking the minus sign button in the Layers dialog. I realize that's less than ideal.
One thing to note about layers in Inkscape. Since there is no SVG standard for layers, Inkscape layers are not true layers. They really are modified groups. Not being able to delete multiple layers might have something to do with that, but that's just a guess.
I wondered if it would be possible to delete multiple layer/groups via the XML Editor. But I cannot select multiple layer/groups.
I can understand if developers were trying to prevent disaster by not allowing multiple selection or multiple deletion of layers. But it seems like it might be a bug to me.
However, I notice in the new Objects dialog, in version 0.92, it IS possible to select multiple objects and/or multiple layers by holding Ctrl key! That would be a very fast way to delete multiple layers, except that the Delete key doesn't seem to delete multiple selected layers. It does delete multiple selected objects, but not layers.
With multiple layers selected in Objects dialog, the minus sign button in the dialog appears to delete the lowest selected layer. I'm guessing that's a bug. I wouldn't be surprised if not being able to delete multiple layers is a bug, but I'd need to do a bit of research on that, to find out for certain.
