Perfectly Aligning Shapes

Postby graphdesign » Sun Nov 10, 2013 1:09 pm

Greetings,

This seems pretty basic, but I'm having a hard time figuring it with the align/distribute tool. I've created a series of triangles and have arranged them in the shape of a hexagon (so that I could make each triangle a different color). For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to perfectly align the triangles! I can zoom in to 25,600% to align the edges precisely, but that seems superfluous and overly time-consuming. Furthermore, even when I've done that, when I zoom out, there is either a minute white line showing that the shapes have not "snapped" together, OR, the top of the triangle is misaligned with the bottom of the other triangle next to it, etc. The align/distribute doesn't seem to be helping...

Is there some sort of "snap" feature that will snap a triangle to the triangle next to it with no gap in between, aligning the shapes vertically and horizontally? I simply want to snap shapes together to form other shapes, with all points of connections aligning where they should be.

Thank you in advance!

I'm a real novice with Inkscape but I think you could try using the Object -> Align and Distribute tool, see screenshots below.

Select File -> Document Properties...

Click on the Grids tab.

Select Axonometric grid and click on New.

Adjust the grid to the size of your triangle. The corners of your triangles will now snap to the vertices of the grid. If the hexagon does not have the right orientation, after you create it, you can rotate it 90 degrees with the selection tool, :tool_selector:, or select Object -> Transform... and select the Rotate tab.

Hello there!

Could you get back and post an example of your work?
You can draw a hexagon from 3 to lots of triangles.

There is a snapping feature with a toolbar where you can enable snapping of nodes to path segments.
But without knowing what exactly you are after that may not help at all.

With the align and distribute panel you can align objects with their bounding boxes, onto horizontal/vertical axises, which means you will need some trick to align to non-horizontal/vertical lines, wich a hexagon surely has.

Thank you all. I moved on to another project which did not require knowing how to do what I asked. I am confident the ideas each of you have submitted will come in handy in the very near future, though.

Thanks again.
