EMF files are loaded with incorrect positioning of elements

Postby longtalker » Fri Jun 27, 2014 10:59 pm

Hello

I just installed Inkscape and tried loading some EMF files containing graphs created by software such as Matlab or Statistica. However in all cases, the positioning of the elements that make up the graph is scrambled, such that a typical graph, instead of looking like this (as it looks when I view the EMF file with, say, Paint; see attachment), it looks like this (see other attachment).

This seems to be a problem with Inkscape rather than with the files, because as I said they look fine when loaded in other software.

Any help? Thanks!

Hello:
-There is the development version , which it should have better support for this kind of files:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... at_support

-You can export those drawings as PDF (?)

- I believe that LibreOffice can import EMF files, then they can be exported to SVG

- It's not neccesary, but you could uplodad your EMF file here in the forum, to see how other users manage these error on inkscape
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

Thanks! The dev version didn't do any better I'm afraid. I'd rather not have to use external software such as LibreOffice, and the PDF format would not help as it has to be EMF in this case.

EMF files dont seem to be allowed as attachments, so here they are:

Hello:
My inner Sherlock is interested in your case, I don't know why.

- I tried Libre Office, just for curiosity... And It doesn't make a good conversion work. It renders the text and the scale axis but not the graphics of the function. So , totally discarded. Allthoug.. It wasn't the last version.

- I tried the last dev version of Inkscape ( for Windows 32 bit 23 jun 2014), and I had better results than the 0.48 release. Anyway, the second graphic wasn't converted perfectly. There are problems with the text label kerning on the right. I repeat, the results were better.

-AFAIK, the pdf format can use vector graphics. But I don't know if your math software can convert your graphics to PDF with vectors. I don't understand why is so important to keep the emf format. Do you want that the final output file to be keeped as emf? It's a limitation, as I don't know how good Inkscape will be at the moment of exporting from svg to emf again.... I read your first post again. You don't have that software, just the emf files.

It may not be easy to program a conversor from EMF to SVG. So, there is not an easy solution. Something it could help to edit those converted files is go to VIEW> Display Mode > Outline, to see which parts are hidden. Some Human-hand Edition must be done.

I guess it's also good to put a grain of sand with the help in development. See here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape

I'm attaching the svg files from the conversion with inkscape's last devel version
