Scrolling documents
Re: Scrolling documents
You can rotate many widescreen monitors into a portrait orientation which makes better use of vertical content such as websites.
I agree mostly with your arguments. Certainly I've become quite frustrated with people who insist on using PDF to distribute content on a website. PDF should not be used in place of a webpage, unless it's meant to be printed. Even then, HTML has great support for formatting a webpage appropriately for print.
I can appreciate that a wide monitor would suggest pages would be better if they scrolled horizontally, but in practice I don't think having to read up and down a page in columns is better than simply reading down. Especially when skimming for information.
CSS3 will allow web designs where content can spill across multiple columns. Since MS took a decade to properly support CSS2, I wouldn't hold you breath waiting for CSS3.
