Align objects, bounding boxes allowed to overlap

Postby Grobe » Sat Jun 08, 2013 10:53 pm

Hi.

Is it possible to do the following in Inkscape? See attachment to understand, I don't know how to describe it with words

I try anyway. I have several different figures that I want to distribute horisontally so that all figures touch each other, but doesn't overlap.

The closest function in Inkscape I know is the "Align left edges of objects to the right edge of the anchor" (ALE for short). However, the ALE function doesn't allow boundary boxes to overlap, so it's useless for this purpose.

I wish to propose a feature request for this, but I ask you guys in case it's already possible to do ;)

Thanks

Don't know any existing automatic method for that, nor think you know exactly what you want to achieve.
In the attachment the exact objects you posted are aligned next to eachother such way more times, but they all look different.
Are you asking for a similar feature that could remove the overlapping of the shapes and not of the bounding boxes?

Available in upcoming releases and in current development release, so probably no point in filing a request. Use it as a two step process, aligning all horizontally and then using remove overlaps with zero in the H field.
Your mind is what you think it is.

^-- That is available in the 0.48.4 r9939 version as well, but it only affects the bounding box overlaps.

I understand now... OP wants a 'tangent' alignment (to coin a term)...should have guessed it would be more complicated than just getting a dev version... Seems like a nice idea to be able to move paths until they contact another path. The 'unclump objects: try to equalize edge to edge distances' seems not to use the bounding box so maybe the functionality is already there.

Druban - Thanks for understanding and to put a term on this.
Yes, a "horisontal tangent alignment" may be a usable term for this :D

Unfortunately the "Remove overlaps" function doesn't work this way in dev versions.

It's late night now, so I wait for tomorrow and I will post a feature request for this.

Too bad there is no good workaround to get a precise alignment.
