Multiple copy/move operation

Postby Grobe » Wed Oct 12, 2011 2:18 am

Hi.

I do have an object. I want to replicate that object let's sat 30 times. I want each copy of the object to move t.ex 40 px to right.

The closest I get is to Create Tiled Clones (CTC). But - no can't. The CTC window doesn't have any move by x/y px/mm for each row/coloum feature.

So to get this done, I have to do this tedious task thirty times:
  • Duplicate selected object
  • In transform dialog box - Move object the distance.
Since the last object (new duplicate/clone) still has focus after it's created, the sequense only takes those steps:
  • Ctrl+D
  • LMB on Aply button.

Any better methods out there?

Thanks

Hi.

Like I said. This numbers is percent of the bounding box size. I want to move it a certain distance independent of ot's size.

Create a 40 px grid, enable snapping, copy the object, move approx. 20 - 60 px to the right, and paste. Inkscape should snap to the grid, and will therefore round to multiples of 40 px.

Alternatively, make 30 random copies, position the left-most and right most objects at their final position, and use the distribute button in the alignment dialog

Don't know about better, but some ideas:

  1. Duplicate to get the number of required duplicates
  2. select all, open 'Object > Columns and Rows…' to align them in a single row with spacing as set in the dialog (in px)
(hmm, didn't we discuss this some time ago already? [1])
  1. create number of required duplicates
  2. select all and use the 'spacing out' option of 'Object > Transform… > Move'
    (see release notes 0.47)

added later:
[1] I had a vague memory of answering in this topic: Condensing/Expanding a line of (text?) objects

Thanks. Rows and Coloums can do. But I still have to use calculator and calculate the space between.
Say each objects width is 40px, an I want each new object to move 120px. Then I must manually calculate the X-spacing.

I cannot remembered to have discussed this particulary topic before.

For a small number of object I continue to use the transform dialog box.

Thanks Rob.

Yes it does work, and when this is about very many objects, it probably is less work.

But, deleting the remaining boxes (If I want to do that) might take some time.

I tried out your suggestion, but used black boxes instead (since I don't particulary like ghost objects). The idea was that IF the cloned object's original object is a group with wto or more objects, I could delete all the boxes when I deleted the box on the original object. But that doesn't worked. The remaining boxes was still there, and I had to manually delete each of them.

it works for me that way - were your really entering the parent object group, or the first tiled clone which sits right on top of the parent?

I usually make the tiles clones, then click on the one (top left) overlapping the original and delete it, then you can right click and enter the group and delete the box...

I just confirmed this on my Inkscape 0.48+devel r10414
