Select and Transform Problems

Postby namewhatever222 » Sun May 19, 2013 6:07 pm

Hello,

When I use the Select tool and try to move, position and/or resize objects they go all over the place - either they get very large, stretch across the screen, go upside down, etc... Somehow I have lost control when I use this tool.

I have tried: disabling all grids/guides/snap-to's (it does feel like my objects are being snapped to something far away) - no dice
I have tried uninstalling inkscape and reinstalling the latest version - no dice
I have tried using photoshop to see if my mousepad is the problem, but moving objects is fine there - just not in inkscape.

I have no idea why this is happening and it is making inkscape currently unusable (or extremely frustrating).

Not sure how else to explain this - hope someone understands and knows how to fix..

Thanks!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

There might be a few different things that could fall under the heading of "can't control object". Your description sounds to me like you may have drawn an object with Pen or Pencil in spiro spline mode. See the Pen or Pencil control bars.

Or if there are a lot of snap targets available, and you have all the snap options enabled, it might be trying to snap to everything in sight. Except snapping wouldn't cause an object to flip upside-down.

If that doesn't ring any bells for you, please tell us how the status bar describes the selected object.

If you are using the spiro tool, and want to keep using it, then highlight the nodes where you are having an issue and add more nodes in, that helps keep things in place. I've found by trial and error that the object will stay in place as you add lots of additional nodes. good luck.

Thanks for your responses. I should have been more clear. The only thing i was doing was, say, trying to place some text in position, or moving an object into position, changing its size, etc.. Every time i used the select/move tool - even just slighting nudging it - the object would jump off screen (usually to the right), get very large (10x the size, then jump back down again, then large again), or go upside down (when trying to move the object down a bit)...

Not using the spiro tool or any other tool but the arrow (select/transform)..
BUT there is a clue now.. When I removed the filters i had applied the problem went away.. This has happened now on many different documents using several different filters each time.. So i'm really not sure why that's happening.. I've never had this problem before - ever - regardless of filters or not..

Has this happened to anyone else? I don't believe it has to do with snapping or whatnot b/c I checked to see all was disabled (and nothing on the right hand panel selected)... But at least in the meantime i can keep working - but i have to remove filters first...

Really appreciate your response, thank you.

When moving the text into position, does this happen when you use the arrow keys (arrow, Shift + arrow, or Alt + arrow)? Or only with mouse?

Well, it may be something local to your system, or Inkscape preferences, in which case, we probably couldn't see the problem in a sample file. But we could try! If you can provide a sample SVG file, we can have a look.

I have seen some weird behavior with very complex filters, which I would probably attribute to the soon-to-be-replaced renderer (already replaced in development/experimental version). But not to this extent.

OH! But if you've applied a filter to an object, and then applied anothe filter right on top of it, and then if there were even more filters on top of each other, I can see this possibly happening. To use more than 1 filter on an object (including text) you should group the object in between each new filter.
