locking in fill, stroke, style settings.

Postby Seydell » Wed May 13, 2009 10:55 pm

Hi, a very basic question:

1. How can I make sure my selection for fill color, stroke color, and stroke style persist? The selection I make for one tool does not carry over to the other tool. I end up using the dropper tool :tool_dropper: to select a previously used color, but even then the change does not hold the next time. How do we make sure a setting stays put.

2. There is a color / stroke setting at the top RHS of the workspace window. I know it gives the option of using the previous style or this tools own style. How do I change "this tools own style" in advance so that it will remain set for the duration of the session?

ps. While writing this post I did figure out part of the answer. Can you suggest the recommended way? Thanks.

Try setting "Last used style" on each under inkscape preferences Shift Cntl P >> tools >> pencil or tools >> rectangle etc..

Thank you EarlyBlake, This should make things a lot better for me.

I have just now joined the IF, been using Inkscape on and off for a couple of years. I am going to search through the IF for a compilation of tips and tricks in the one file. It could give a lot of good ideas to the infrequent / average user.

One can search the forum for a topic of interest. What I was thinking of was a single file, subdivided under say, tools and techniques, and under each tool, say :tool_pen: , have a one or two- line entry. eg.

TOOL: PEN :tool_pen:

- connect two Bezier curves: this is how to do it.

- set persistent settings: this is how to do this

- change stroke color / setting on the fly : this is how to do this

- better technique for closely tracing a Bezier curve over a background image: this is how to do this.

- another technique for closely tracing a Bezier curve over a background image: this is how to do this.

- etc., etc.

The advantage with a list that is updated say every week by a few gurus ( from the postings to the Forum during the week ) is that it would expose a lot of techniques that one was not aware of, or was not exactly looking for. But having got the tip, one could try it out and quickly become familiar with it. Another thought is that every week's addition to the list, would also be displayed separately, so users could just glance at the additions only for a quick update, and then the additions would also be merged with the main list.

Just an idea - I am sure you have something similar here already.

All the best.
