Inkscape transparent Background

Postby dacoch215 » Sat Apr 14, 2012 2:00 pm

Hi, I'm new to this forum

I already searched and what I found was abour exporting png's... which has nothing to do with what I want to do

I'd like to know if it's possible in Inkscape to change the background to something other than white

NOT the canvas, but the background

I'd like it to look kinda like a "transparent" Layer

Image

so the page would be "inside" that transparent indicating background

kinda like this

Image

I hate the background being the same color as the canvas...

if I could do that or the opposite

like only the canvas transparent

looking something like this

Image

though I'd rather have complete control over this, if it's possible

I really don't like losing all the white objects in the background

all help is very much appreciated

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

You can do that in File menu > Document Properties > Page tab > General > Background. Click on that checkerboard bar, and a small dialog will open where you can set the color that you want.

I think it might be possible to have it the same color every time you open Inkscape, although I'm not positive.....pretty sure though. You'd have to create your own custom default template. Open Inkscape and set it up like you would want it to open, every time. Save as default.svg and save it in Inkscape/share/templates.

not possible in the current state of Inkscape, sorry, but you can fudge it a little by drawing objects that simulate what you want - e.g a page-sized white rectangle on top of a checkerboard filled background - and then save that file as 'default.svg in your user> templates folder. Inkscape will automatically open that setup every time at launch. Of curse you would have to remember to delete these objects once you finished working on the file...
Your mind is what you think it is.

Mhmm. Combine this instruction with the idea of placing those parts on their own locked layer and you're in business.

Absolutely. Excellent amendment, Bob.
To the original poster - Bob's suggestiion is vital to keep you from constantly selecting these two background objects when clicking away from your drawing.

It's entirely possible that I've misunderstood the original question. If you actually want the checkerboard pattern, then druban and BobSongs suggestions are right on. Using my suggestions, you can change the color and/or opacity, but you can't apply a checkerboard pattern in the same way.

Here's an example of what I was speaking of. Figured I'd include it as it's fairly simple.
