I get an error message about two nodes must be selected. (even when they are)

Two objects must be selected, and one of them have to have 4 nodes (quadrilateral I believe it's called).
You can draw such an object by drawing a rectangle and converting it into a path, then using Node tool to rearrange the node positions, or use Pen tool to draw a closed path of 4 nodes.
