i know it works on vlc but puppy linux 431 [which is what i'm using] don't have it yet and gxine can't play .ogv

Most can be found in our repo (http://screencasters-repo.heathenx.org). However, we're not making AVI's anymore. Install Mencoder and convert OGV's to AVI's with:
mencoder input.ogv -oac mp3lame -ovc xvid -o output.avi
mencoder input.ogv -oac mp3lame -ovc xvid -o output.avi
