Trace Bitmap preview/update size

Postby brynn » Tue Oct 19, 2010 10:01 am

Hi Friends,
I've played around with Trace Bitmap quite a bit. But one thing that I haven't sorted out yet -- sometimes the preview update area shows the full size of the image I'm tracing, but other times, and especially the one I'm working on now, it's tiny. Is there any way to control that size?

The image I'm working on is a BMP that I scanned in from the hard copy. It's an old piece of sheet music I found among my mom's old music books. I just really like the design on the front, and thought I'd do something with it using Inkscape. I guess it's a pen and ink line drawing -- all green lines on an off-white background, quite faded though. But the background's not important, it's the line drawing, which is quite detailed, that I want to vectorize.

Anyway, I like some of the results I'm getting, but it's really hard to see the preview update, so I'm having to actually trace every time I try a different setting. Is there any way to make the preview bigger? Even if I maximize the dialog window, the preview is like an inch wide, inch and a half tall.

The other weird thing is that when I open it in Inkscape (File menu > Open Recent)(or Windows Explorer > Open With > Inkscape), it opens as pretty near exactly the size that shows in the Trace Bitmap preview. The zoom indicator shows that as 14%. But putting it to 100% does not affect the Trace prieview. So not only do I not understand about the Trace preview, I don't understand why it opens at 14%. I tried Save As SVG, after increasing to 100%, but it didn't change the Trace preview.

Also, I wonder if it's tracing the 14% size, if I would get a more accurrate trace if it traced the 100% size?
Does anyone have any thoughts, comments, or hopefully even solutions for this?
Thanks for your help :D
