how to limit an area

Postby lorquino » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:56 pm

Hi everyone, I hope you can help.
I have done a Spirograph (something like this http://stusshed.files.wordpress.com/200 ... 183017.jpg),
and I would like to fill some of the spaces in between with different colours, but Inkscape informs me that I am trying to fill an area that is not limited. How can I limit the spaces so that I can colour them independently ? I have tried thinking about doing something with :tool_node: but nothing succeeded?

The only think I have "achieved" so far is to colour the line of fill all the spaces with the same colour, or with the pattern evenodds, but other than that nothing else :(

Any help will be pretty much appreciated,
thank you!!

I assume you are using the :tool_paintbucket: . on the tool control bar you will find a drop down menu to the right, try selecting 'lightness' . The default 'visible colors' is probably giving you that message.

Off topic:
Tip: delete the spirograph after filling every space and you are left with a cool stencil-like picture!
Your mind is what you think it is.

Spirograms made with Inkscape are limited to 1000 nodes. So if the variables define a spirogram with more than 1000 nodes, the path is not closed. (It just stops drawing at 1000, and if you look closely, you can see the ends of the path.) If it's the one that you provided a link to, it looks like it's closed.

However, I'm not clear if you're trying to use the Paint Bucket tool or a regular fill. To do what you want, you'll need to use the Paint Bucket tool.

If the image you linked to is exactly what you're using, it might be that there are tiny spaces between the pixels that make up the line in the image. If that's what's happening, you could adjust the Close Gaps setting (look in control bar, right beside Grow/Shrink).
