Hello,
I have installed the program on winxp sp3 inkscape 0.48
I could not use the save as feature.
I found a post about checking the error log. The error log mentioned missing dependencies.
I see no information on the web site, documents, tutorials, faq, articles or even here on the forum about what dependencies are needed.
So..
What dependencies are needed?
Where do I find them?
Is there any specific requirements to installing them...ie. oreder of installation?
And finally,
Am I the only one with this problem or does the Universe just hate me?
Thans,
Bill

Re: installation dependencies

Welcome Bill!
I'm not sure if that error log would have any helpful info for this problem. Usually it would be used to learn why you couldn't save a particular file format.
When you say you can't use Save As, is that because the Save As dialog doesn't appear when you call for it? There's a known bug with Inkscape version 0.48.2 (on Windows only) where the Save As dialog doesn't appear if the file you're trying to save was previously saved to a root directory (C:\ or a flash drive, for example). I have heard that moving the file into a folder solves the problem.
But I don't think that bug occurs in 0.48. Maybe you mean you were trying to save as a particular format? If that's the case, then that log will be helpful. But depending on which format you're having trouble with, you probably only need to install 1 or maybe 2 things. Not everything on the list.
So the first step is clearing up what you mean when you say you couldn't use Save As. If it's a particular format, please tell us what that is, as well. Or if none of this seems to apply, please clarify

Re: installation dependencies
Welcome Bill,
I guess it's the Universe that's after you as you'd normally wouldn't need anything extra to save a file as. Could it be that you deleted something from the installed Inkscape directories? But as Brinn says,.. what exactly are you trying to achieve? As for the bug Brinn is talking about,.. the root directory would be your c: d: or whatever drive without a folder. Move the file into a folder/directory and then try again.
I am not sure why the bug exists, but in general it is a bad idea to safe files in the root directory anyway.

Re: installation dependencies
To clarify about dependencies. Everything you need to run inkscape is installed via the inkscape installer. There's no dependencies that you install separately. If you keep getting an error in inkscape about a missing dependency which is crucial (specify name) then you just might have a corrupt installation. This is very unlikely though. It could be normal for that message to show up when it starts up on windows, as there's a lot of common codebase for the various platform distributions. In inkscape go to the Help->About menu so you can tell us the build number. This might help, along with any other further detail you can muster.
