Ubunchu

Postby c-quel » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:15 am

Not sure if this is too well a known fact, but Inkscape plays a HUGE role in the English translation of the Ubunchu manga series.

As some of you may or may not know, Ubunchu is an Ubuntu-based manga created by Hiroshi Seo, and in transition of being released to the public under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license. I help with the English and Spanish translation and reediting, but there are over 15 different translations for this manga and growing. ^^

For more info you can visit: http://ubunchu.net/
Or you can go straight to the author's English website: http://seotch.wordpress.com/ubunchu/

In any event, today I'm posting the instructional insert for Ubunchu Episode 04, the official English translation of which will hopefully be finalized this weekend. Aside from page 3 of the manga which is an embedded PNG, everything else is drawn entirely in Inkscape, and showcasing various texturing and shading styles. The image itself inherits the same CC-BY-NC license, so you're more or less free to play around with the elements in the SVG file. :)

Please enjoy!

No problem. ^^b

I reckon I'll use this thread for future Ubunchu updates as they appear. My older works can be viewed at my DA page: http://c-quel.deviantart.com/

A new Ubunchu wallpaper to promote our new mailing list ("Club Ubunchu"). It is a vectorized version of a quick hand-sketch that the author, Hiroshi Seo, posted. Unlike my other wallpapers, this time I put in some effort to add variable-width linart using the calligraphy tool, in order to better approximate the exquisite curvature of the original sketch.

Risa and Akane are drawn the standard method, but with a separate lineart layer to expedite the detailing process. Masato's lineart was drawn entirely with the calligraphy tool, hand-traced off the original sketch.
