Inkscape loads and opens but does not display an edit window

Hi. I use a Mac G4 tower with OS 10.4.11. I have installed the X11 from the tiger CD, reinstalled the macport and done what appears to be necessary for Inkscape to work. I can open Inkscape, but the menu bar only has "Inkscape" with no File, Edit or other menu items. The drop down menu for "Inkscape" only has these items: Services, Hide Inkscape, Hide Others and Quit Inkscape.

I am at a loss. All suggestions welcome.
