Finding the gui way of running keyboard commands

Postby Sab » Sun Jun 24, 2012 11:29 pm

This question might seem a little weird for the pros out there but how do i find out the way of launching a command i have from the inkscape gui? For example i know that shift+f6 will launch the bezier tool but how do i do it from the GUI.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Help menu > Key and Mouse Ref contains all the keyboard shortcuts. According to that, you can launch the Bezier or Pen tool with Shift + F6, or simply b. (I don't really understand why 2 different shortcuts are needed, but it might be related to different operating systems. That's my guess, anyway.) (Otoh, both work on my Windows system....???) Using the interface only, of course, you just click on the Pen/Bezier icon, which is :tool_pen: . Maybe this would help also: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... atomy.html

The bezier tool was just an example. I am sorry for not being clear enough. I wanted to edit the question after i posted it but unfortunately could not do so until the topic was approved. Anyway getting back to my problem, in many tutorials I see only the Keyboard shortcut, and not the way to launch it using the gui. I would like to know how to find the GUI way to launch a given command(For example the bezier tool stands for a particular icon on the toolbox. If I wanted to launch I had to select more and pen as the icon ws not shown by default. I want to know if there is documentation of a command to a gui way of launching it. The issue is because I am extremely new to Inkscape and am not familiar with all the tools yet!).Hope that explains the question.

mind you though there's some keyboard "commands" which are not available in the gui, such as the shortcuts for different ways to move selected object or letters inside text. While it's good to know what's for what in the gui, inkscape developers have chosen the right interface for the right job, e.g. nudging an object a certain amount is with keyboard as it's impractical using mouse, and there's no gui/menu way of achieveing same. you'll soon pick up the common shortcuts that you actually make use of and you'll be able to find the other things mentioned in tutorials. some people do go overboard in tutorials (in my opinion) by providing a shortcut for every action taken. on the other hand a lot of the youtube inkscape tutorials seem aimed at a wider audience, with both the gui and shortcuts explained.
