How to add fonts?

Postby iamshawnrice » Sun Oct 05, 2008 6:32 am

Hi.

I am trying to add to my font library and don't know how to do this.

Specifically, I am looking for elegant script fonts for business cards.

Any ideas?

You add fonts to your system, not separately to Inkscape.

Download the font you like (you can search free font sites, like http://www.dafont.com), and put the font file (usually .ttf) with the rest of your fonts.

Here are instructions for winXP I copied from somwhere else

From the "Start" menu select "Control Panel" and then select the "Appearance and Themes" category.
Select "Fonts" from the "See Also" panel at the left of this screen.
On the "File" menu, select "Install New Font..."
Click the drive and folder that contain the fonts you want to add.
just hand over the chocolate and nobody gets hurt

My understanding is that FontExplorer works independent of your application. FontExplorer loads and unloads fonts on your sytem, not per application.

If you use Linux all you need to do is symlink the directory where the font is to /home/user/.fonts/
I think you can something similar in windows, at least W2k and XP, make a shortcut to the fonts in \windowssystem\fonts\ and I think that will work

I've just installed Inkscape for adding text on photos, however, one of the font I installed earlier in my Mac couldn't been used in Inkscape... it's called "Jellyka, Saint Andrew's Queen"... can someone help me here? option of this font style is available in the font list in Inkscape, but the actual font style didn't appear when I typed, the style which appeared seemed to be Ariel or something... :|

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

In my experience, Inkscape is particular about fonts. If they aren't stable, Inkscape will substitute one that is more stable.

Is this a font that you purchased? Or a free one? If some time has passed since you installed it, maybe there is a more recent version, that might be more stable? Or maybe you could find a similar font somewhere?

One of the problems that i notice is that Inkscape offers you some different styles for each font (as in italic, bold, etc.) but for some fonts - especialy wacky free display ones - ONLY ONE of these choices will show the font, all others will by default show the system closest like sans or arial etc. so my advice is to open the text and font dialog and select your font and then try each choice. You might find your font hidden in one.
Your mind is what you think it is.

babegirlblue,
I thought the font name/file name might be a problem with your font, so
I installed it to see if would work for me, and it does work just fine.
Can you use the font from your office software, or the gimp, or anything else?

Here it is in my Inkscape window. I added an outline to try and make it more visible in the screenshot.

Maybe you should Un-install the font, download a new copy, and install again if you continue to have problems with it.
Also, try checking the file permissions. Other than that I have no suggestions, I'm out of ideas.

edit: added note. This font doesn't have a bold style, so try to make sure bold isnt on when you try to type with it.

Your problem could be as simple as a previously selected font being active when you begin to type with the font tool.
Try selecting the font you want after you activate the font tool, clicking on the canvas, then selecting again, and clicking on the canvas in a new spot.
watch the font list when you do this to be sure the active font is really the one you want. If your desired text still doesn't appear,
Try saving a blank image with the desired font selected. Then reopen the image and activate the font tool...does your desired font
appear in the font list? If it does, begin to type, and see what happens.

its a bit hard to see slender fonts in a screenshot, but you can at least see that it works.
