switch location of 2 objects

Postby hamid1455 » Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:25 am

Hello, I am a new inkscape user and am learning this program, so please bear with me. Is there a way to switch the location of 2 objects easily somehow? Because right now, I am manually copying and pasting the x and y position of each object and then switching them. For instance, say I have a circle at (5,0) and a square (20,4) and I want the circle to be at (20,4) and the square to be at (5,0), is there a way to do this quickly? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard!

You can do that by the align and distribute panel, which you can enter by pressing Ctrl+Shift+A.
Duplicate one of the objects or draw a rectangle for an example to be used as a spacer.
Firtst, use the align and distribute panel to position this spacer object to one of the objects.
Then, move it down to easier select the object previously below by pressing PgDn.
Then, select that object on top, and align it to the other object's position.
After it's at the right place, press PgDn as before and select the other object,
then select the spacer as well, and align the second object to that spacer.
After you done this, you can delete the spacer.

To select multiple objects for the align and distribute, hold down Shift when clicking on the objects.

Another -theoretical- way, is to use the snapping option.
I can hardly make it work, but theoretically you can snap bounding box edges to bounding box edges.

Hi.

This function is in place in the developers version but not yet in the stable version.
Swapping positions of two objects is just one mouse-click away!

See "Rearrange" in this dialog from developers version -Inkscape 0.48+devel r12339

You can install both versions and switch between the two.
