Crashing in XP...

Postby davek0974 » Fri Feb 07, 2014 6:45 pm

HI all, i am trying to use Inkscape on my XP virtual machine but it crashes out every 5 minutes or so, are there any known issues with virtual machines and this program.

It looks an excellent program and will do what i need perfectly but I cant use it at present.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi.

Is that the program that is crashing, or the file has something too much to handle:
too large embedded images/too many unused defs, like unused gradients.
If the second, by linking the raster images instead of embedding and running the vacuum unused defs in the file option will make it work.
If not, there is an option in the inkscape preferences (Shift+Ctrl+P) where you can set auto-saving, to prevent data loss if inkscape crashes again.

HI

all im trying to do is import a bitmap, trace the outline, discard the bitmap, change stroke/fill to 1px stroke and then draw a path around various bits to create a cutting path for a cnc plasma table.

It works for about 5 mins then will crash every 3 or 4 mins or so, i tried saving my work regularly but sometimes you don't even get a chance to finish a path!.

The auto-trace option can result in high node numbered paths.
You can try the simplify path option (Ctrl+L) to reduce that largely.
Also, you may try to break apart the paths (Ctrl+Shift+K), which at least improves the rendering time.

Thanks but if there are such simple limitations then i will have to have another search for software.

My work needs very smooth curves and the jobs are pretty complicated mostly.

Thanks anyway

Hi

Can you provide a link to an image which causes Inkscape to crash?

Hi, it's not the image as I have installed it on a PC at home today and all was fine for 5 minutes then I get the message "Inkscape has encountered an internal error and needs to close" then it does what it says and closes.

I was just scaling an image for tracing, it just seems very unstable in XP.

Does anyone know of a working install for Mac OSX Mavericks yet??

I went through all the Quartz install malarky but after downloading the Inkscape package I got a message about it not being able to be opened in Mavericks????

You may check inkscape's launchpad site, where more developers can read your words and maybe you will find some help:

It looks like this issue is only visible on virtual machines.

I borrowed a friends laptop running XP today and inkscape has been running fine all morning.

Does anyone know why it would not run in a Virtual environment????
