Clipping unexpected behaviour? bug?

Postby timeth » Tue May 04, 2010 4:03 pm

Hi folks,

I'm not too sure if this problem is my incompetence or a bug. Maybe I'm missing some step in the clipping process.

I have created a bunch of separate images in one window that are all clipped images. I now want to put each of them onto their own canvas and save them as separate files. When I copy and paste one onto a new canvas of it's own, some of them work and some don't. e.g. some parts of the image are missing on the pasted copy. I tried it a few times and it's always the polygons that are missing (in this case they are stars)
I have attached an example here. You can see the original clipped image on the right and the copied and pasted image on the left.

Any ideas? :(

Edit: I thought it may be a problem with polygons but I created some of my own and tried it and it works. So, maybe the problem is that the stars in the image below are clones.

Difficult to tell without access to the original SVG document - but it is likely the same issue as Bug #169120 in Inkscape: “Copy and past over different documents with clones”.

Thanks suv.

After reading the bug report you linked to, I tried creating my own clones and pasting them to other canvasses. I tried all combinations e.g. copying and pasting the original along with the clones - it worked fine. I tried deleting the original and just copying and pasting the clones which also worked fine (although the clones each became individual images when the original was deleted)
It seems that when I create the clones myself it works ok, but not if using a downloaded image that makes use of clones.

If I create some clones and attach them here, could someone please try opening them and then copying and pasting the image to another canvas and report your findings? That would be cool. Thanks ;)

The downloaded images possibly have the original of the clones hidden in the <defs> section, thus it will not be part of the selection that is copied into the new document.

OTOH if you create the clones yourself in Inkscape, the original is usually still visible (unless you hide it in a separate layer) and part of the selection copied to the new document.
