moving an svg

Postby Chriz » Sun Jan 10, 2010 8:37 am

Hello I just recently got inkscape and I drew a graphic that was relatively detailed. My problem is that now that I've completed it Im trying to move it around the screen and I cannot. I have been able to move alot of things around the screen while I was drawing the graphic but now I can't. The graphic has 2300 objects in it, could this be the problem that I am having. When I simplify the path it moves no problem but the graphics quality is pretty much shot. Is there a way that I can get this graphic to move and keep the quality that it is intact. Like I said this program is completely new to me, should I have been simplifying the paths as I was going along. I kind of drew it traditionally by hand and gave no thought to how many paths it had. I would appreciate some insight on how to remedy the problem that I am having.

I think as you learn more and use Inkscape more, you'll probably change your workflow in such a way that you don't end up with so many paths, nodes, etc. But for now, try zooming way, way out. You can zoom out to 1% (or even 0.1% I believe), which of course will make your image really tiny. It will be much easier to move, and then you can return it 100% (or whatever), without any loss. However, if at 1% you can't achieve the precision you need to place the image where you want, try reducing the zoom little by little, and you'll eventually hit on an acceptable compromise.

Also, if your intent is simply to center the image on the canvas, you can use the "Fit page to selection" button on the Page tab of Document Properties. Although if your image is so resource intensive, you may have wait a moment or 2 for the move to take place. I suppose reducing the zoom would speed this up as well, though.
