If I set it to:
R = 1000
r = 10
d = 1000
Epitrochoid
rotation = 0
Quality = 16
it does not complete the shape. If I raise the Gear radius, or lower the quality, ring & pen radius it completes more of the shape. It gets to the same point on different computers regardless of operating system or memory.
Is there some internal limit configuration which is adjustable so as to complete larger and more complex shapes?
Cheers
Spirograph limits
Re: Spirograph limits
Well first, welcome to InkscapeForum!
And yes, the paths created with the Spirograph extension are limited to 1000 nodes. I'm not sure why, but I would guess because some of them would just go on forever, and eventually crash any system. There are some, that I think would not be infinite, yet still a closed path with more than 1000 nodes. And if I had any coding skills, would make the Spirograph extension to only be limited to 1000 nodes, if the path is infinite (or open). Although still, I think there would have to be SOME kind of limit. Because most of the time, spirograms with over 1000 nodes start to just blacken in with the path overlapping itself many times.
Work-arounds. I've played with that extension extensively (?)(!), and with a bit of careful node editing, have successfully closed many open, 1000 node paths. Of course they are no longer mathmatically true, but I'm only after the image. And in some cases where the multiple overlapping paths start to be a black blob, you can reduce the stroke width, with quite nice results.
You might want to search my username in the Finished Work forum, where I posted some of my spirograms. There might be some in the Work In Progress forum too, I'm not sure (it's been a while). And I'd love to see some of yours, if you wanted to post any

Reducing the Quality will help "finish" the shape, you don't have to change other values.

Re: Spirograph limits
Thanks for the responses, I guess what I was wondering about would be is it possible to say double or treble the number of nodes. I'm using settings with the outer gear as a multiple of the inner gear so they don't go on forever.
I like yours, Brynn, what I am doing with mine is getting them to a point and them moving them into Photoshop or the Gimp and doing things with layers and blending and stuff. I'll pop something into the finished work bit when I've got something ready.
I'll also try and respond a bit quicker now that I've figured out the email alerts thing
Cheers
