[howto] "Punch" picture to border

Postby len » Thu Nov 26, 2009 7:30 pm

Hi all,

Can you guys help me with this? I'm familiar with Gimp, now i want to learn Inkscape better.

I've 2 objects:
# at top a box with rounded corners and some lines that are not straight (drawn with :tool_pen: ). There is no background, but only a thick line. It functions as a border for the picture
# under the border is a picture. The border is smaller and - off course - is a not a rectangle.

I want to use the border to punch out (is that the right term?) the underlaying image. In the end, the picture is show only inside the border.

I know how to do this with Gimp (make selection, switch to layer, invert selection, CTRL-X). But i can't find the right way to do this with Inkscape. What is the right term, is there anywhere a tutorial etc?

What I would do:

1. Select the border;
2. Press ALT + D to clone it. The clone will be selected automatically;
3. With the cloned border still selected, hold SHIFT and click once on the image below to select these two objects;
4. Menu: Object > Clip > Set

You should now have the original Border and a clipped image. The full image is still intact if you release the clipping mask.
The reason for using ALT + D (clone) as opposed to CTRL + D (duplicate) is that the clip area will readjust if you change the shape/size of its parent (the border).
