hello,
i recently downloaded inkscape and have been making designs using stock images taken from the web. whenever i copy and paste these images into an inkscape file, there is a new file created in my pictures folder called "inkscape_pasted_image_20100513_201959" or something like that. is there a way to stop inkscape from creating these files, and are there any other files that inkscape creates that i do not know about?

No, not in Inkscape 0.47. Inkscape doesn't embed the pasted images but creates those 'inkscape_pasted_image_*.png images and links them into the SVG file. You can see this indicated in the status bar when selecting the pasted image: it says 'Image XXX x YYY: file:///path/to/your/image'.

If you import your files (after downloading them to your disk) via 'File > Import' they will be linked into the document without creating additional copies.

'Edit > Make a Bitmap Copy' works similar to pasting raster images from the clipboard: a PNG file is written to the disk and then linked into your document.


The next version Inkscape 0.48 will most likely embed pasted images and bitmap copies automatically and offer the choice to embed or link bitmap images drag&dropped from the file manager or imported via the file dialog.
