Swapping ctrl/alt/shift functions?

Postby SaltyTrout » Sat Mar 23, 2013 10:17 pm

Hey, new to Inkscape and I really love it, but I've been a long time Photoshop user and I started mixing up those three keys in both programs after using Inkscape for a while . Now I'm trying to swap over the functions of the ctrl/alt/shift keys' functions to be like Photoshop's, specifically: I want the alt key to zoom the canvas instead of ctrl, I want ctrl to scroll side to side when pressed instead of shift, and I want shift to lock image aspect ratio (keep the image locked proportionally) when resizing instead of ctrl, but I couldn't find any setting for that anywhere. Is there a hidden setting menu for these that I'm missing or are they just hard-coded to be like that? Thanks in advance! :D

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I'm not positive about this, but my understanding is that those are hard coded, and not changable, unless you know how to do the coding. There are many shortcuts which you can customize though, if you don't already know. See share/keys/default.xml.

The only item that has any bearing on your request is preferences>behaviour>scrolling>mouse wheel zooms by default checkbox.
Can Photoshop change its keyboard controls for Inkscape users who don't want to change their habits? :D
Your mind is what you think it is.

Hi.

To change key mappings; edit the file default.xml in Install_dir/Inkscape/share/keys.

You can also add your own; see here; viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13631

Yes, but I'm pretty sure that Shift, Alt, and Ctrl are hard coded, and can't be easily changed. I'm sure I've seen that somewhere in this forum, and my recollection is it was a comment made by ~suv. Of course I could be wrong, but I don't have time to search it out right now. I'm pretty sure though. :D

You might be right! Or - not! :)
Another option; there are "ready-made" files in the inkscape/share/keys/directory,
make a copy of the default.xml and then rename the one you want to default.xml.
Restart Inkscape - (not computer).
Following files are "ready.made";
    acd-canvas.xml
    adobe-illustrator-cs2.xml
    corel-draw-x4.xml
    default.xml
    inkscape.xml
    macromedia-freehand-mx.xml
    right-handed-illustration.xml
    xara.xml
    zoner-draw.xml

Good Luck
