Squeeze / Stretch Layer. How Get Rid of It?

Postby TomBrooklyn » Sun Oct 09, 2011 6:11 am

I want to make an icon 48 pixels square, and I got three layers. The bottom is 48, the middle is 46 and it fits inside, and the top is a letter text and to make the letter fill the box, the layer is 66 wide.

Can I fill the box with the letter without making my icon 66 wide?

Actually, this 66 wide thing squeezes or stretches the who icon, not just the letter. Where did it come from and how do I make it go away?

Besides that, when I save it to flickr, flickr says it's like over 1000 pixels big and the icon is just a litte dot.

Hhhmm....so when you say "layers", you must be talking about the z-order. Because Inkscape layers can't have dimensions, at least that I know of....not from the interface anyway. Possibly it could be done in the XML editor. But anyway, these dimensions you mention must be the objects?

Is the icon a letter in a box? Does the letter have a blur, or any filter applied to it? Filters often can cause an image size to be enlarged, sometimes by more than double.

Or I guess some fonts might be built with something like a filter, which causes it to be much larger.

Well, I've just done a quick test, and it appears to be possible to clip away the excess, without losing the effect caused by the filter. So you could try this. First, duplicate the whole icon, just to have a safe copy in case things go wrong. Next draw a rectangle 48 square, then Path menu > Object to Path. Place it over the letter. Or duplicate the 48 square box on the bottom. Select the new square, or duplicated square, and the letter, then Object menu > Clip > Set.

Does that fix the problem?

Hi Brynn,

I found how to group the objects together which was another thing I was struggling with, and now the extended part is no longer an issue.

Could you please attach the SVG file, so we can download and look at it? I thought I was on the right track, but if grouping solved the issue of one object/layer being larger, well it wouldn't have solved the problem. So now I'm thinking I might have been wrong.

On the other hand, after saying the problem of one object/layer being larger was solved, then you said the image is still too big. So it sounds like the problem was not solved after all. So you can see that I'm thoroughly confused.

If we could look at the SVG file, we can get past the different terminology, et al.

(To attach the SVG, use the full editor, not quick reply. Look below submit button for Upload attachment tab and follow prompts.)
