node size - performance issue?

Postby brynn » Sun Aug 22, 2010 11:30 am

Hi Friends,
I'm working on an image which ultimately will have prodigious amounts of nodes (trying to reproduce a photo using only Inkscape). I guess I haven't exactly counted the nodes yet, but it appears there may be enough already to challenge Inkscape's known performance issues. My machine is practically brand new, and has loads of memory....4 gb ram with Intel Core i7 processor. There has been virtually no increase of CPU use, so while it may be a performance issue, it's definitely not a resource issue.

Here's a screen shot to show the problem. Nodes on the left side of the purple path are tiny, plus the path itself is pixelated. While the right side of the path, the nodes are normal size, and path not pixelated. I think, but not positive at the moment, there may be 2 subpaths there. I noticed the problem while trying to join them, and I'll go back to that after I post this. So I'll edit in any further info I might find.

Image

I had an issue recently, where blurs weren't being displayed properly (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5699&start=0). Upon ~suv's suggestion, I increased the filter display quality, and that solved it. However, there's no filter in this case. Is there some other display setting I can tweak? Or am I bound to start conservation measures already?

Or otherwise, is there another possible cause for this?
Thanks for your help :D

What method did you use to create the path(s) shown in your image?

Inkscape will show (display) path nodes that are stacked on top of each other by making the stacked nodes a smaller size (scale) then a "normal" path node that is not stacked on another path node. A simple way to find out if there are nodes stacked on top of each other is to use the node tool and rubberband select one of the smaller nodes.. The notification display should update the tip message and show "2 of xyz nodes selected," .

I used the Pen/Bezier tool.
Well yes, that was my first thought, and I just drag away a node, to see it there is one underneath (and then Undo). But no there are no nodes hidden underneath the left side. After closing overnight, open back up today, and the problem is resolved -- which is exactly what I expected would happen. But I suspect there might be a similar type of display issue (to the filter one that I referenced). Because even if there were hidden nodes underneath each node on the left, that doesn't explain the pixelation of the path/stroke. I'm sorry my screen shot cut off too much of the left side, so that you can't see it, but the pixelation was quite evident. I'll get a better shot if it happens again. For now, I've reduced the number of nodes, but they will increase again, as I continue to work.

Anyway, thanks for your comments. Any tips what to look for, if it happens again?
