I'm extremely new to this vector drawing process. I'm trying to create figures for publication in a Journal using Inkscape. They need EPS of <20mb. For the first figure I have two png files of 2.3kb and 50.8kb. I make up an SVG file in Inkscape with these, add a layer and some text in that layer. The resulting EPS is 24mb. My question is where is all the extra data coming from and how can I minimise the size of the EPS file I'm generating?

I'm trying to read around all this but as I said I'm new to this area so please be gentle. Thanks.

Which version of Inkscape are you using?

(There have been two bugs [in all 0.47 prerelease versions] that caused increased file sizes in PS/EPS/PDF export (related to text and fonts, one of them only on win32 platforms), but they were fixed right in time for the final release of Inkscape 0.47)

0.46 on Ubuntu 9.04.

So could be the bug.

I solved my problem by making figs in OpenOffice, exporting as PDF and converting using pdftops.

Shame, because I thought Inkscape was pretty easy to use... enjoyable even!

Anyway I'll try upgrading in the meantime.

No, at least not those two that I had in mind. They were regressions in the 0.47 prerelase versions.

Must be a different bug then!

Upgraded using PPA release and now have EPS of 1.1Mb from same SVG - much more reasonable! Will now endeavor to get more Inkscape experience!
