Best way to transfer from Inkscape to Gimp?

Postby headlands » Fri Feb 06, 2009 4:43 am

Greetings all,

I'm a newcomer to both Inkscape and Gimp; please forgive any ignorance on my end.

I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to export from Inkscape into a usable format for Gimp. I tried exporting from Inkscape as a .png file, but it comes out much darker then it is in Inkscape, and when I open it in Gimp there is a checkerboard of grey boxes in addition to the file.

I also tried a transfer program called ConversionSVG a number of times, which never actually produced a file of any sort.

What are your suggestions for the best way to go from Inkscape (graphics and text) into Gimp (photo and effect work)? I'm on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.6.

Cheers,
Noah

You can open png and even svg files in GIMP (in the case of svg you'll have to choose the size you want it rendered in).

Checkerboard boxes mark transparent areas. The default background color in Inkscape is transparent but it is not indicated as checkerboard pattern, you just see white screen. If you want your png to have white background you can change the bg color in Document properties (turn up the opacity). You can also do it in GIMP, create a new white layer and pull it bellow your png (png will be a separate layer).

I'm not sure why it's darker, what mode do you have selected under Image > Mode in GIMP?

I usually directly open svg files in GIMP but you can't go wrong with either svg or png.

Your darker colour problem might be because of an ICC profile you have loaded in GIMP? You could test this by creating something in GIMP, saving as PNG and opening it in another application and seeing if its lighter.
