How to help needed please ?

Postby MagicBytes » Sat Jan 02, 2010 11:04 pm

Hello, how can I capture an area of my picture to the clipboard using any shape tool, for example a circle or elipse or square or rectangle or star or polygon shape, I wish to capture the area inside these shapes please ?

Any help appreciated thanks in advance :)

Cheers from MagicBytes :)

I think you're probably looking for Clip:

There may be another way to do it, depending on your picture (Path > Difference), but I'm guessing that Clip is probably better.

Hello, thanks for your reply, but that is not what I want, as your suggestion removes my picture on the outside area and leaves me with what is inside my clipping area. :(

Let me try this another way to explain it, maybe I wasn't clear on my explaination !

I open inkscape, I load in a picture, I use the circle tool and drag out a circle over my picture to a suitable size that only covers the area I wish to work with, then I wish to be able to copy this area to my clipboard, so that I have a copy to use later in my project, then I wish to paste it some where outside my picture for later use, then work on my original picture.

I hope I explained what it is that I wish to do now.

Cheers MagicBytes :)

It sounds like you're used to working in a bitmap editor like GIMP or Photoshop. You cannot "select" a portion of your bitmap image in Inkscape. You will have to simply duplicate your bitmap then apply your clipping path to one of your copies.

Try this.

Place your shape over your picture, select both and do clip.

This should leave you with just the bit you want to use later.

Do copy.

Then do undo. This will bring back your original picture with your shape on top of it, select the shape only and delete it.
This will leave your original picture for you to carry on working with.

Do paste and it will put the clipped section of picture on the screen and you can move it off to the side to be used later.

Is this what you want to do?
