Pattern Along Path then Wrap around Circle?

Postby krakenfan69 » Mon Feb 25, 2013 11:20 am

Lets say I create a star :tool_star: copy it to the clipboard. Then I create a stroke :tool_pen: and use pattern along path to repeat the star pattern along the selected stroke. :tool_star: :tool_star: :tool_star: Can I now wrap that path of stars around a circle? :tool_ellipse: I can't seem to get it and searching just brings up the basic Pattern Along Path tutorials.

I would appreciate any help,

Thanks,

Hi KF69,
It sounds like you're trying to apply pattern along path , and then using that result for another pattern for another path. I don't think Inkscape can do that. You'll need to create the object which is now a star pattern along a path, as a compound path.....I'm not sure if this will work, but it might. Select the first pap and do Path menu > Object to Path. That should make it a compound path, and then you should be able to use it as a pattern for the other path. (If Object to Path doesn't work, you'll need to draw it fresh.)

PS -- I just tried it, and Object to Path did work for me :D

I am using a development build of Inkscape, but these path effect routines are AFAIK the same as the ones in 0.48.4.
When applying the path effect I am using the link to path option, not just the clipboard option. Please see the manual for an explanation!
Good luck!

*Note that when I put the pattern on the circle i introduced a small spacing gap to show the result better.

**Also note that although the original spiral did not really have to be converted to carry through all the way to the final result, editing it in any way is not possible without conversion.

***Also note that this results in a huge and unbalanced stack of defs. Vacuuming or cleaning up your document will result in this stack crashing down and all links but the last being broken. The same happens when closing and reopening the document, for the same reason. You might want to develop some understanding of the link to path option and how it interacts with the defs. Not that i have one.
Your mind is what you think it is.

Wow druban, very impressive!!

I'm not familiar with the link to path option for pap. I'll have to look into it later. I'm really surprised that it worked to use an existing pap as the pattern for another pap. It apparently can only work using the link to path option, because I did try it using the more common paste routine. I would only get the error message that one of the objects was not a path (or something like that).

(Note that I think we are both talking about using the LPE. I didn't test at all with the extension.) Anyway, nice work :D
