Trying to import file from Adobe Illustrator

Postby seans_potato_biz » Fri Feb 17, 2017 5:40 am

I would like to import an arrangement of text and images that I made in Adobe Illustrator into Inkscape. When I drag the .ai file into Inkscape it lets me import the first line of images in the file but for some reason ignores the rest. Any idea why? Screenshots show the image in Adobe Illustrator and the result of trying to import into Inkscape. Is there something I can export to from Illustrator to make Inkscape handle it better?

What happens if you change the 'clip' option? (I have no idea, just guessing)

If Moini's comment doesn't help, if you could provide the AI file for us to test with, we could investigate further.

I'd try PS, EPS, SVG and PDF in that order.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

I put the file in my dropbox so it can be downloaded from here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2am19hkhb2nj8av/Exp.SS.4.5.137-158%20-%20GFP%20ZFNs%20and%20CRISPR%20-%202014-02-26.ai?dl=0

The crop option doesn't help. I'll try different export options for Illustrator now. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the file. I'll take a look at it in illustrator if I get a chance later today. Might be an export setting.

Thanks very much. I was able to export into SVG and import that into Inkscape but some things are not well preserved, like the fonts and the kerning and the relative sizes of the labels and the label backgrounds. My other export attempts could not be imported.

Howdy,
The file references a number of linked images, which of course won't be available to another program or computer. There should be a panel for the document's images in Illustrator that allows the choice of linked or embedded images . They would need to be to be embedded to allow opening the .ai file in Inkscape.

There may be other issues, but that would be a start.

Off topic - AI doesn't allow screenshot? Just curious why the photos of your monitor?
