I would suggest starting with the shapes. Just practice drawing them, moving them around, grouping, ungrouping, changing size, cloning, filling with color, changing color, remove stroke, change stroke color. These are some of the very basic parts of Inkscape. If you select a shape, then Path menu > Object to path, you can deform the shape by moving the nodes around. Be sure to play with the Star shape tool -- it can do some awesome stuff!

If you will look in my signature, the Quick Guide to Inkscape is perfect for beginners (imo). Also, be sure to check out the Help menu > Tutorials. The first 2 tutorials there are even more basic than the Quick Guide ;) (I think the 2nd tutorial explains how to use the Star tool.)

If you want to draw, like on a sketch pad, the Pencil is the best tool. Look up the Pencil tool in the tavmjong bah Guide, also in my signature (also Help menu > Inkscape Manual). You can...sort of..."manage" the pencil tool (any tool) from the tool control bar (see Inkscape Window in either Guide). The tool control bar changes with each tool, and has settings to help make the tool do what you want.

If you're a serious sketch artist, or want to be, you'll probably want to invest in a pen and tablet for drawing with a computer. These are hardware items; literally a pen and tablet that connect to your computer -- draw on the tablet, watch it displayed on the computer screen. Wacom is a brand used by many artists, but you can google tablets/pens to find other brands.

And please feel free to ask us for help with anything you can't figure out (just be sure to give us plenty of details about what you're trying to do and what's going wrong) :D
